Family Therapy

What is Family Therapy at Light Street?

Light Street Psychotherapy specializes in a Strength-Based Family Systems approach. We believe every family is a unique ecosystem with its own values, communication patterns, and inherent resilience. Rather than focusing on blame or “the problem child,” we view the family as a collaborative team capable of fostering harmony and healthier connections.

Our Clinical Approach

We help families move away from negative cycles by focusing on the present while using the past to inform growth. Our work incorporates:

  • Systemic Perspective: Understanding every family member’s viewpoint to solve problems collectively
  • Skill Coaching: Teaching parents, children, and siblings practical tools for more productive interactions
  • Mindfulness: Helping families stay grounded in the present to reduce reactivity and increase emotional intelligence
  • Collaborative Problem Solving & Stress Management:
  • Communication Skills: For expressing difficult emotions such as anger
  • Emotional Intelligence: Building empathy and understanding for one another
  • Behavior Modification: Assisting with positive reinforcement and consistency to replace maladaptive interactions with healthier, more productive coping skills

Who Can Benefit?

Family therapy is an effective intervention for various dynamics, including:

  • Behavioral Challenges: Families with children, parents, or siblings who may use behavior to communicate distress
  • Major Life Transitions: Navigating divorce, a move, school transitions, the loss of a loved one, or traumatic grief
  • Medical & Psychiatric Support: Families managing a child’s chronic illness or psychiatric diagnosis
  • Relational Repair: Families feeling disconnected or recovering from the trauma of abuse or domestic violence
