Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy – Informed Approach (DBT) at Light Street?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that balances acceptance with change. It is designed for individuals who struggle with pervasive patterns of ineffective coping, such as emotional instability, chaotic relationships, or self-injurious behaviors.

Comprehensive DBT vs. DBT-Informed Care

We provide a thorough assessment to determine which level of care is most appropriate for your current needs:

  • Comprehensive DBT: A highly structured program including weekly individual therapy, a dedicated skills group, and 24/7 phone coaching. This is the gold standard for individuals experiencing active suicidal ideation or severe behavioral dysregulation.
  • DBT-Informed Therapy: This approach applies DBT skills and strategies within the context of individual therapy. While it incorporates the same focus on mindfulness and emotion regulation, it does not include a skills group or phone coaching.

Our Clinical Approach:

Through our DBT-Informed approach, we help clients master the four core pillars of the modality in their relationships and everyday life:

  • Mindfulness: Learning to be present in the moment without judgment
  • Distress Tolerance: Developing the strength to get through a a crisis without making it worse
  • Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing intense "emotional rollercoaster" shifts
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Building healthier relationships and learning to communicate needs and boundaries effectively

Who Can Benefit?

  • Clients who are "emotionally vulnerable" and/or emotionally reactive
  • Clients seeking a balance of validation and practical, change-oriented skills
  • Clients with ineffective coping patterns
  • Clients struggling with chaotic or difficult relationships
  • Clients who are curious about understanding their behaviors and learning new ways to cope with stress
